Sacramental Preparations at Saint Bridget - Celebrating the Scrutinies
What are the Scrutinies?
You may have seen several people called forward over the last few weeks to go through something called a Scrutiny. What is a scrutiny? The purpose of each scrutiny is “to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect” and “to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good” (RCIA Rites Book, 141). As part of each scrutiny, there is a prayer of exorcism. This is not the Hollywood type of exorcism, but rather a prayer for protection and to keep the devil away as the Elect continue their journey towards their sacraments at Easter. We also use different
readings at the Masses where we celebrate the scrutinies. This is to highlight the themes of sin, conversion, faith, and ultimately healing, that are central to the experience of our elect in this process. Please continue to pray for our elect and all of those in our parish who are preparing to receive sacraments!
