Monday: Faith

Prayer for the Day

Prayer will be prayed at the beginning of the day, and at dinner or in the evening.

Loving Father, thank you for this day and the many opportunities it will bring to know you better. As we work together and share these moments, help us to grow closer to you and to see the many ways that you reach out to us each day. May our experience increase our faith and create in our hearts a longing to know you more. We ask this through Christ our Lord, in unity with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Morning Reading

John 20: 24-29

"Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord.' But he said to them, 'Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.' Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, 'Peace be with you.' Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.' Thomas answered and said to him, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him, 'Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.'"

Morning Reflection Questions

  1. How does Jesus respond to Thomas' doubt? Does he get angry or rebuke Thomas? Why not?
  2. Look at the picture below of the painting from Caravaggio that depicts this encounter with Jesus. What do you notice about the painting; what questions does the painting raise for you?
  3. In the painting, how does Jesus respond to Thomas' doubt? What does that tell you about how Jesus responds to us in our doubts and concerns?
  4. Has there been a time when you questioned something about your faith? What did you do to explore those questions? How did you questions help you to deepen your faith?
